The Portrait We Didn’t Plan
An unplanned conversation gives a portrait the honesty that a carefully held pose could not.

A fictional art journal story inspired by everyday moments. Gallery imagery is illustrative.
My friend arrived twenty minutes late and immediately asked whether she had to smile.
I said no. She looked relieved.
We had planned a portrait session for weeks, but neither of us knew how awkward it would feel to sit opposite each other without doing anything else. She adjusted her sleeves. I rearranged my pencils. We talked about work.
Then she started telling me about a job she hadn’t got. While she spoke, she stopped holding herself in a pose. Her shoulders dropped. One hand stayed wrapped around a mug that had gone cold.
I made most of the drawing in those few minutes.
When she saw it, she was quiet before saying, “I look tired.”
I offered to change it.
“No,” she said. “That’s how that week felt.”
We kept it that way.
