A Street I Almost Walked Past

A sudden shower, a fruit seller, and one fallen orange become the beginning of a painting.

A fictional art journal story inspired by everyday moments. Gallery imagery is illustrative.

I had gone out looking for something worth drawing, which usually means I come home disappointed.

Then it started raining.

I stood beneath a shop awning beside a delivery rider, both of us pretending the rain would stop soon. Across the road, a fruit seller pulled a blue sheet over his cart. A few oranges rolled towards the edge. He caught two and missed one.

That was the moment I wanted to paint.

Back in the studio, my first sketch felt too busy. I had included every signboard, motorbike, and window. I started again, keeping the bent figure, the blue sheet, and one orange on the wet road.

I never learned the seller’s name. But I spent the next three evenings noticing how carefully he had tried to save what was his.
